Tips For Setting Up Your Snake Enclosure

The same tried and true rules apply to setting up a snake cage whether you are brand new to snake ownership, or if you have been in the hobby for a long time.  We will go over the top items when setting up your cage including, size, water bowls, lids, substrate, and the accessories for your habitat.

The initial thing you need to think about is what size is right for your snake.  It makes a difference based on breed and age of your pet.  A baby corn snake maybe best suited to live in a small shoe box size enclosure till it is a yearling.  While other larger snakes like pythons and red tail boas would need a larger tank such as a wide 20 gallon size.  It is best to first start your snake out in as small a cage as possible, then upgrade as your snake grows.

You will also want to look at whether your snake needs an enclosure that is wide or high.  Tree snakes spend most of their life living in trees and as such require a high tank with things to climb on.  Ground dwellers like the boa will want more room to spread out on the floor of the tank and a wide tank is a better suit for them.

After you have picked the correct size snake cage, you will then need to start thinking about setting it up.  Choosing the proper substrate is an important choice.  You could go with a very appealing natural environment such as soil.  It looks good, but is a pain to clean up.  You could go bare bones and just use plain old newspaper, however this is not very nice to look at.  A great choice is to use one of the commerically made substrates that combines asthetics with ease of cleaning.

Once you have your flooring set, you will need to add accessories for your snake.  They will need a place to hide and feel safe, things to climb on and rub against.  Rocks, wood, bark, all make good additions to your cage.  Having something to rub against is important when your snake enters the molting period.  If your pet is a tree snake you will need elevated wood that the snake can climb and live in.

You will also need to add a water dish to your cage.  This bowl will be both for drinking and swimming as some snakes like to take a dip in the water.  Make sure that the bowl is securly situated in the cage and that the snake can not easily tip it over.  You will also want to keep an eye on the water quality.  The animals like to defecate in the water and you should always change it as necessary to keep it clean.

After the cage has been set up on the inside you will want to focus your attention on the lid.  It needs to be ventilated as well as fit tight and secure so that your snake can not escape.  You can fix the lid to the top of the enclosure with bungee cords, or purchase cage clips from a local pet store.

Those are the main areas you will need to focus on when setting up a snake habitat.  Other things to consider are temperture and humidity in your cage, however that is a whole nother topic.

how to get melted plastic lid out of dishwasher on the heat thing?

I know i just asked as ? a day ago about how to unclog the rinse aid compartment on a dishwasher and now a lid slid throught and got melted. I have washed plastic bowls and lids in there before and never had a problem but now i will not be doing that anymore!

I would use a plastic scraper and scrape as much as possible off the heating element. It might stink the first time you use the heater but maybe if you use the dishwasher a few times without the dry cycle at the end it will clean it off. We never use our dry cycle anyway, however I know that element is used to heat the water also.
